History

The Hispanic Media Initiative began in The University of Texas at Arlington Department of Communication as a response to the successful launch of UTA News en Epsañol (UTANE) in 2010. Undergraduate students produced UTANE as one of the very few Spanish-language television newscasts run entirely by students and was recognized by the National Association of Hispanic Journalsts (NAHJ) for its excellence. It engaged in unique on-air broadcast journalism partnerships with Univvision and Telemundo and led UTA's commitment to Hispanic media research and publications. Each accolade and student hire brought us one step closer to developing an original university initiative to support the growing demand of Hispanic media professionals. In 2015, UTA faculty and staff members created the Hispanic Media Initiative to serve the University's students better and to advance hispanic media education, journalism, and research.

Mission

HMI approaches its mission by continuing to partner with private enterprise, producing multiplatform journalism content, researching and publishing Hispanic media studies, developing collaborative spaces connecting academic institutions, and creating unique opportunities for students interested in pursuing a career in specialized journalism targeted to Hispanic demographics.

The initiative consists of five pillar projects: Hispanic Media AudioVisual, Hispanic Media Exchange, Hispanic Media Partnerships, and Hispanic Media Initative Alumni. Each pillar plays a key role in the sustainability and development of HMI by supporting specialized functions and providing a space for collaborative work related to HMI's strategic goals of national and international impact.
